Ann & Dan’s Excellent Adventures
Things are not as they may seem.
Ann and I have been dying to get out photographing, but Portugal has just let us know we’ll need to wait another few weeks before that might be possible. So in the meantime, we’ve turned our eyes to subjects on our daily walks and I finally found one that was worth pulling out the camera for. Join us to find out what thoughts it brought to mind.
Printing the Image - Stone Town, Zanzibar Portfolio - Part 1
I’ve dropped a few hints lately about various projects I’m working on (yes, projects plural) and I’ve finally gotten around to pushing one towards completion. Join the website to find out about the making of my first printed folio from digital images . . . well the beginning of it at least.
Shooting the Shooter - Bandon, June 2018
Ann’s been busy with the arduous task of culling through her old catalogs Check in to see what she came across for one of our shooting the shooter images.
Lesson #5 - Trees
We had our fifth and, unfortunately, last Thinking Photography workshop with Charlie Waite last week. Join us on a post about that session’s topic - trees.
51% - 49%
This is another post based upon the on-line workshop Ann and I are taking. Come join us to see what I thought of one of the points raised in our most recent session.
Printing the Image - Mist and Clouds
It’s been a while since Ann and I printed images, too long in fact. So it was time to select a few images, work on them and then fire up the printer. The theme for the images was mist, which came from the image that was the basis of the “Developing Images” post. Join us to find out which images we selected to print this time.
Bandon 2019 in Black and White
Almost two years ago Ann and I took a weekend trip to Bandon. Even though the weather wasn’t supposed to be ideal, we went anyway. For once we were plagued with overcast skies instead of the incredible morning light we usually get there. That didn’t stop us from photographing anyway and it made for some interesting black and white images.
Lesson #2 - Skies
This week’s Thinking Photography workshop class was about skies, and since I’ve been going through a lot of images recently, I decided to give them a quick review with the workshop session fresh in my mind to delve into the topic a bit further (face it, I don’t mind “studying”). Come join us for an image-rich review of our “skies” lesson.
Olmstead Point, Yosemite 2018
This should be a short post, as much to fill you in on a few things as anything else. The choice of the photographic image, however, isn’t totally random and has to do a bit with the news. So join us on the site for a mid-week update.
Developing Images
A couple of weeks ago, on one of my writing breaks, I walked up the stairs to check out what Ann was doing. On her monitor was an image she was working on and we started talking about the developing process. From that chance encounter we’ve since periodically talked about developing images so I figured it’s about time to put my (read: our) thoughts down in words and to share them with you.
!%@ %*#& ^!$*%& @*$^#%! BREXIT!
It took me a while to calm down enough to write this post (something one might question given the title), though I must confess I’m still not quite over it. Let’s just say that, despite all our best efforts - to include moving to Portugal - we still didn’t manage to totally escape what I’ve been calling the Anglo-Saxon disease.
Yosemite Creek - 2015
Ann had been looking at (and working on) some old images, so I thought I’d take a mental break from brief writing this week and do the same. I picked a year - 2015 - and picked a dated but unnamed folder that had a bunch of images in it. I decided to dive in and see what was there and then pick a single image to work on. Let’s see what Yosemite NP had to offer me this week.
Canyonlands Tree
Sometimes when you’re out and can’t quite find something grand to photograph, you settle on something simple and try to enjoy the craft of photography. On our first trip out to the desert SW, a bit west of Moab in Canyonlands NP, I was faced with just that situation. Looking back at that image recently I realized there was more there than I’d first thought so I decided to develop it with fresh eyes.
Story Time - Shed Wall
Some things are almost irresistible for a photographer; well, at least for me. And the opportunity to photograph on an old farm with dilapidated vehicles and well-aged structures was just too good to pass up when I first stated lugging around a 4x5 camera. Come check out one of my first 4x5 color transparency (slide) photographs.
Shooting the Shooter - White Pocket
We have a curve ball for you today. For once the shooting the shooter photograph isn’t of me, it’s of Ann! Join us to check out Ann’s image from our visit to White Pocket in 2019.
