Shooting the Shooter - Yosemite Boulder

On the second day of our Yosemite Adventure, right after I messed around in the snow and rocks, I mentioned that after I extricated myself I had to go find Ann.  As I approached her I noticed the two trees that are the last image of the post.  But as I approached those trees (happy that Ann’s camera was pointing in a different direction) I realized that she  was trying to photograph an interesting rock that had a very elegant slot in it.  She eventually gave up on it, not making a single shot, and headed back towards the main trail while I photographed the trees.

I looked at that rock after I finished my image, and also couldn’t figure out what to do with it, standing by itself.  So I headed back towards Ann, who was setting up for another photograph.  While I was waiting, I turned around and realized that my problem was that I hadn’t been far enough back from the slot rock, so I made a beeline back towards the rock, knowing that I needed to add a bit of context to the image.

When Ann was done, she turned around to photograph me.

I had to get my camera as high as I could so that you could the base of the slot.

Also, I developed the image in both color and black and white.  I think the black and white is more expressive of the eerie feeling such an usual shape gave when approaching the rock.

As I mentioned in my previous post, we definitely need to get back to this part of Yosemite!
