Iceland One-Off - Rock Face

On our first trip to Asbyrgi, we stopped at the ranger station and, as I often do, I asked about other locations in the area we should try to visit.  The ranger told us of a not-frequently visited part of the area between Asbyrgi and the waterfalls to the south.  After our morning shoot at the Asbyrgi pond the next morning, we decided to head over to Hljó∂aklettar bílastae∂i to take a hike among some lava formations.

One of the things I found most interesting about Iceland’s lava formations is the diversity of formation types and their ages.  Most locations have signage explaining the type of lava present, its age and any unique aspects about how the formation was created.  All very informative.  But every so often, you come across something that just visually leaves you in awe.

We saw plenty of basalt formations during our trip.  Plenty of basalt formations with lichen growing on it.  But this one appeared as if someone had painted it to make it special, then protected it from the elements by creating an overhang above.

I couldn’t not photograph it.

Strangely enough, earlier this week, I saw a very similar image on Ann’s monitor.  Guess it called out to her too!
