Shooting the Shooter - Flashback

Ann has been going through her catalogs the past few weeks looking at her early work.  She’s finally decided it’s time to try and cull out the work that is worth looking at (for one reason or another) and compiling them into collections so she can work with and learn from them.  Believe me, I heard a lot of moaning and groaning when she was working through the early years.  Fortunately, once she hit 2017, the griping seemed to die down a bit.

She’s at 2019 now and when I walked by her office I saw some really nice images on her monitor I stopped by to check them out.  Of course Ann immediately wanted to show me an image of myself.  Well, I guess it’s better than nothing, because it immediately made me think, “I can get a quick blog post out of this!” (We are deep into trip prep at this stage and I want to save up a couple of posts to relieve any pressures from blogging during the trip.).

So this was taken on September 26, 2019, at 7:38:18 pm.

This was taken a few seconds later, at 7:38:45 pm.  It’s the middle of three exposures (17:38:24, and 17:38:54 were the others).  I remember that evening well as the sun was dropping quickly behind the distant mountains, which is why the area behind me was already in shadow and why I had my camera pointed in the direction it was (earlier, I was photographing the area that is off to my right).  An image taken 8 minutes later pointed in this same direction has no direct sunlight and is lifeless.

Looking at Ann’s images from Goblin Valley was a good reminder of how amazingly beautiful a place can be, how light can make it even more incredible, and how quickly that light can change.

Hopefully, we’ll be in for a lot of that in Iceland.

ADVENTURE UPDATE: Well, our trip began earlier than I thought. July was a busy work month, but I finished a project (at least as far as I’d hoped to get on it) a week earlier than planned. Instead of taking on anything new (like really, I was going to be able to focus on something new just before our trip?), I decided to ease out of things. So instead of Sunday (i.e. tomorrow) we decided to leave on Thursday. So by the time you read this, we’re already on the road. That gave us not just the weekend, but a few days to get everything prepared, for me to mentally unwind from work (instead of doing so in Iceland) and to plan for a short excursion through Denmark. We decided to ease into it, but we should have a couple of decent photo sessions to get us warmed up for the real show. Our ship still departs on Tuesday, so you know where we’ll be then - Hirtshals, Denmark preparing to board the MS Narröna.
