Interlude - Grumpy Kit (Not Suitable for Young Children)

Please pardon the thematic interruption, but sometimes things come along that warrant a change in plans.  And while that theme comes up during the next leg of our 2017 Overland Expo West expedition, it is totally irrelevant to this post.

Those of you who have been around Ann and me long enough know that I love to hear her laugh.  So much so that I will do things, often silly, frequently downright stupid, just to get her to laugh.  I love hearing her laugh.

That said, imagine my curiosity back in 2012 while I was in the kitchen when I heard Ann bust out laughing (as she would say, “laughing so hard I almost peed my pants”).  It was early days during one of Kit’s greatly appreciated trips out to visit us, and Ann and Kit were in one of the back rooms doing god knows what.  So as I’m walking back to see what’s up, and they’re walking out from the back, Ann says with tears in her eyes, “Go ahead Kit, do it for him!”  Words don’t do it justice so . . .

It is, quite simply, the Grumpy Kit look, or as used in speech, “Kit, do Grumpy Kit!”   Now, sometimes it’s with one hand, other times its with two.  And understand that the above photograph was made as Kit was leaving the trip, giving us one final Grumpy Kit before he went through the TSA line (I swear they scanned him long and hard before they let him leave the secure area), which means we had a lot of Grumpy Kits during our trip.

So much so that if I heard a spontaneous Ann laugh coming from anywhere, I knew what had caused it.  Line too long at the coffee shop, Ann starts laughing.  Lack of killer whales while whale watching, Ann starts laughing.  Traffic jam driving through Portland, Ann starts laughing.  Seagulls trying to poop on us while we’re on the ferry to Orcas Island, Ann starts laughing.  You get the point.

Now pretty much every time we get together with Kit, Grumpy Kit makes an appearance.  And Ann breaks out laughing. Ok, not just Ann, I do too.

So imagine our reaction the other night when, from out of the blue, we get a text message from Kit saying:

“I’ve found my spirit animal!”
